It’s believed that 1 in 230 cats have diabetes, but the symptoms appear gradually and can be hard to spot before it’s too late. Worse still, some forms of kidney disease are thought to impact around 1 in 3 cats and can have very few warning signs until it’s quite far advanced.
Ever since cats lived in the wild, they’ve become the masters of disguise when it comes to pain. This evolutionary trait was kept cats safe from predators in the wild by hiding any signs of weakness, discomfort or illness. This makes it difficult for owners to know if there’s a serious issue, like diabetes or kidney disease, that could be having an impact on our cats.
Luckily, there is a solution. The Checkup Kit can help you detect an issue before it’s too late…
What is it for?
The Checkup Kit by Kit4Cat has been specifically designed to look for specific common issues in cats. This includes kidney failure, high glucose levels (which could signify cat diabetes), urinary tract infections, and blood in urine. All of these conditions can be potentially very serious and even deadly if not treated.
Early diagnosis of all these issues is vital, particularly if you have a cat that is older or overweight. A Checkup Kit has been designed to try to pinpoint these health problems for early diagnosis and can be used once (if you suspect a problem) or on a more regular basis to ensure your cat is healthy.
How it works
Inside the box is a bag of special litter, which allows your cat’s urine to rest on top for sample collection instead of sinking in. You’ll also get a sample collection pipette to collect the urine, before placing it in the sample collection vial. Once in the vial, use one of the two testing strips supplied to dip into the sample and get ready to read the results. There is a handy results card that explains everything you need to do and what all of the different colors mean. You also get a second testing strip, just in case something goes wrong with the first one.
Some tips for using
The Checkup Kit is easy to use, so you shouldn’t encounter any issues with collecting the sample and reading the results. However, it’s essential that you read the results on the testing strip at the correct times (30 seconds for the first three and then 60 seconds for blood in urine) to provide an accurate result. The ‘positive’ results on the right-hand side of the card mean you should talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible. However, it’s recommended that you discuss any findings with a professional – both good and bad.
The Checkup Kit is ideal for those who have older or overweight cats who may be more prone to the diseases that it checks for. It’s easy to use and saves costly trips to the vets. You can also use the kits for regular check-ups on your feline friends, just to ensure they’re as healthy as they can be and aren’t hiding any pain or discomfort from you.
